In 2023 at the time this book was published, Freddy Burton, now known to me as Muhammed, had spent fifty three years in prison. In that same year, with his son Freddy, Jr., I visited him at the Somerset Correctional Institution in Somerset, PA. It was my first time in a prison and I am grateful to his son, who'd been there from the time he was a toddler, for preparing me for the experience of the gruff guards, body scans, dogs, and rules as I entered the prison.
Since that time, Muhammed and I have visited on Zoom nearly every two weeks. With the persistent efforts of the Abolitionist Law Center he has been transferred to a prison in Chester only a short distance from his family in Philadelphia. The move however has not changed his commitment to being exonerated, and he has filed yet another PCRA petition. A hearing on the petition is scheduled for December 2026. In December, Muhammed will celebrate his 80th birthday.
Last month, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional the mandatory felony murder sentence of life without parole that Muhammed was given so many decades ago. We now wait for the state legislature to create a new law that could free him and up to 1,000 other incarcerated men and women sentenced under that arcane inhumane rule.
I will see him in person again next month and we will enjoy each other's company as friends.
